Patrick Antonelli, University of Florida Health, Gainesville, FL Dr. Antonelli is our daughters surgeoun. Without him Harper would not have been implanted when she was. I was worried about the surgery and all, that was up until we met Dr.
The knowledge and experience he has simply put me at ease. The day of surgery with everyones nerves running high, he again like always was very calm and collected, simply putting my fears to rest.
I know that he has done many implants over the years and my daughter was his second youngest! I could not say enough about him and how important he is to us. I often refer to him as our “miracle man” as he is the man who created our daughters miracle of hearing! He’s implanted hundreds, if not thousands of patients, giving them the gift of soundincluding my son who he implanted when my son was.

Elyahu’s family nominated Dr. Michal Kaufmann Dr. Michal Kaufmann, Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital, Israel Dr. Michal Kaufmann is the Senior Physician in the Dept.
Of Ear Nose Throat and Head & Neck Surgery at Haddassa Ein Kerem Hospital in Israel. The moment that the ABR test confirmed our little Ely’s profound deafness, Dr Kaufman immediately came over from the ENT clinic down the hall to start to talk to us about the next step that we were ready for. She successfully inserted bi-lateral implants when Ely was just 7 months old, and has been in touch with us ever since. We are so grateful for her dedication and incredible professionalism! We have been able to approach her with our questions and concerns every step of the way. Now Ely is 2.5 years old, and is talking in full sentences- it is such a miracle – Rachael M.
Rodney Lusk, Boys Town National Research Hospital, Omaha, NE Dr. Lusk is not just an extremely skilled surgeon. He genuinely cares for his patients, has a real soft spot for the children, and equally as important is the way he treats the parents. When we, as parents, didn’t know where to turn or whether things would be ok, Dr. Lusk was there with all the answers. He took the time to explain everything to us and was always just a phone call away.
And after our daughter was implanted, he beamed from ear to ear as he witnessed her receptive language develop and as she spoke to him for the first time. Lusk is a miracle worker with a heart of gold, and he will forever be our hEARo. – Carri and Randy C. John Niparko, University of South Carolina Keck School of Medicine, Los Angeles, CA Dr. Niparko performed cochlear implantation surgery on me while he was at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, Maryland.
He is now with the Keck School of Medicine at USC in Los Angeles, California. I received my first CI October 12, 2010, my second CI February 29, 2012. I was deafened by Streptomycin at 18 months of age and am now 58 years young. I never thought in my lifetime I would be able to hear and understand a spoken conversation on a smartphone. Niparko continues his interest in cochlear implantation, he rode with Jacob Landis in Los Angeles when Jacob was raising money for CI surgery. Jacob was also one of Dr.
Niparko’s patients. Christopher Danner Perhaps one of the finest human beings I’ve ever metthe essence of what someone who has taken the Hippocratic oath should bekind, caring and dedicated to his patients. I would say he is arguably as good if not the best implant surgeon in his field. At the top of his game and a top-notch staff to assist him.
Abstract Mutations in the GJB2 gene are responsible for more than half of all cases of recessive non-syndromic deafness. This article presents a mutation analysis of the GJB2, GJB6, OTOF and MTRNR1 genes in 252 patients with sensorineural non-syndromic hearing loss.
Thirty-one different mutations were identified in GJB2 and GJB6 in 86 of the 252 (34%) patients. We describe for the first time two new mutations in GJB2: the missense mutation c.29 TC (p.Leu10Pro) in the N terminal domain and c.326 GT (p.Gly109Val) in the intracytoplasmic domain of connexin 26.
This work shows the high prevalence of GJB2 mutations in the Argentinean population, with frequencies that are comparable to those of the Mediterranean area. Most important, it adds two novel GJB2 mutations to be taken into consideration in the genetic diagnosis of non-syndromic sensorineural hearing loss. Karger AG, Basel References.
Abstract and. Auditory brainstem implant in children. Cabeza Cuello online.
2007, vol.67, n.3, pp.244-249. ISSN 0718-4816. Aim: To discuss the results obtained with auditory brainstem implant (ABI) in children non-eligible for cochlear implant, presenting with non-NFII related hypoacusia. A case report study. Materials and Method: Two cases are presented, both of children (aged 3 and 10 years old, respectively), who underwent ABI because of nerve and cochlear agenesis Results: Post-implant audiometric levels were 30 to 40 dB for frequencies between 25 and 6000 Hz.
Both patients were able to fully detect the Ling sound test with good and fast answers in a structured non-visual cues-situation within the first post-activation month. Conclusions: In our experience, children with nerve and/or cochlear agenesis could be considered for ABS implantation, because the auditory nuclei's anatomy is intact Keywords: Brainstem auditory implant; cochlear implant; cochlear agenesis; cochlear malformation; severe hypoacusia.
